02.01.2009 Simon St James (SSJ_GZ): Khrooty4Daily - Highly Experimental!
Experiment - Khrooty4DailyNot much feedback here (but thanks to those wo did reply :)), but, hey - let's give it a go anyway!I've cleaned up and uploaded a copy of Khrooty4Daily which you can find here. A few notes before people download it:I'm going in completely blind here, and have no idea if this will work across distros - it could easily simple fail for most people at the first hurdle.A chroot is not as insulated as a VM - in particular, processes started in the chroot are not separated from those started outside the chroot.Again unlike a VM, it's possible for apps in a chrooted environme...
06.06.2016 Finally: Umbrello works on MsWindows
One of the tasks in my Google Summer of Code project was build Umbrello using KF5 in MsWindows and see if had any problems. I spend two weeks in this task, some days I get blocked about Python issues that you can see in my previous post here. However, when I fix those issues and configured the cmake to find the KF5 and Qt5 libs manually inside the project on QtCreator, Umbrello build fine without any compilation errors. But, I get an error about missing DLL’s, that after a little research I discover that the error was about the missing path to D:/kderoot/bin on MsWindows %PATH%. After ...
14.04.2008 Martin Meredith: Setting up networking on an ubuntu server
Ok, by popular demand (aka ompaul) I’ve decided to do a mini-howto on setting up networking on an ubuntu server, for those who are new to it. In Ubuntu itself, when you install the desktop version, you get a nifty little tool called “Network Manager” (you may have noticed the icon, espescially if you have wireless) which pretty much does everything for you. However, if you’re using the server, without a GUI then this isn’t generaly available. So, where to start? It really depends on your network setup, you need to know a few things about your network before you st...
12.09.2014 KDPIM back from holidays: You got mail!
If your mail inbox was quiet during the last month, it could have two causes: Either nobody contacted you, or your KDEPIM made holidays! Jokes aside, KDEPIM 4.14.0 was released with a refactored IMAP fetching code, in preparation for a planned GMail IMAP plugin. The refactoring includes a more modern way to fetch the mails from the server, which unfortunately broke with some specific IMAP servers not completely conforming to the IMAP RFCs. The effect of this bug is that no mails are fetched from some IMAP servers when you check for new mail, despite new mail arrived. If you were using such a s...
11.04.2013 Boot Artwork for Kubuntu 13.04
At Kubuntu we value user feedback a lot and so we worked on new boot artwork that is largely based on input from previous releases. It features not only our traditional but nevertheless excitingly awesome blue but is alltogether striving to be as subtile as possible. (also we fixed a long-standing bug in GRUB, I hope you noticed )
21.02.2010 Ariya Hidayat: distcc, VirtualBox, NAT
The following scenario is quite typical. Your family member, spouse, or coworker has this fantastic, powerful, brand-new multicore machine which, for some reasons, has to run Windows or Mac OS X. On the other hand, you probably have some el-cheapo laptop which is also wonderful but it lacks the processing power to do heavy-duty build and compile. Now, what if you can exploit the other box for a distributed compile? Especially if the powerful box seems to be idle once a while, doing nothing. Many of you already figure it out the solution: let's install Linux on a virtual machine and use tools l...

13.07.2010 Ryan Rix (PhrkOnLsh): $PS1 tricks
Back when I switched from Debian to Fedora, the biggest, and hardest to get used to, change was the fact that the bash prompt looked like this: Not having the full directory in the pathname had always been hard to get used to, but as I learned to delve deeper and deeper into source trees, that became really nice. And then (I think, feel free to correct me) Pinochio at Akademy reminded that that setup has its own set of limitations, and it was more and more clear that having only part of the PWD in the prompt could be an annoyance, particularly as I used pwd to constantly check whether I was i...
23.04.2011 QApt sexiness…
…or shrinking your GRUB list the easy way! /Going into [K]Ubuntu mode… Have you ever seen your GRUB list grow into such a monster? Wouldn’t it be great if you could bring it down to this? The Easter Bunny has the solution: Simply select your old/unwanted entries and BANG, gone! Can’t get any simpler than this! Boring details follow (that is, no more eye candy screenshots). I am talking of course about kcm-grub2, the GRUB2 Bootloader Editor. On Git (soon to be released, perhaps in a week) you can find package management integration in this GRUB KConfigModule which ena...
