Two top 10 lists for you*: PowerShell scripts, Security resources

OS Emulator Top 10 lists are win-win. They're often easier to write than, say, a big essay or technical investigation. And they're easy to consume, because most of us don't have the time to read, say, a big essay or technical investigation.Now...

24.03.2009 Luis Augusto Fretes Cuevas: Kontact: Contacts (KAddressBook)
In the last article I was very positive toward the Kontact suit. However, Contacts is the exception to this. The interface is way too cluttered and wastes too much space. From the main interface to the Contact editor, everything seems like it could be fairly better. On the other hand, If I recall correctly, a new Contact application is being developed (and makes use of Akonadi), the interface of this new one seems a lot better (a lot like the Mac OS X Contacts application, which isn't bad in this particular case). It's called KContactManager.Critics aside, let's have a look at KAdressBook:By de...
02.11.2011 Listaller Project – An introduction
This article is not directly KDE-related, so you might want to skip it. But if you’re interested in a cool project simplifying the way software is distributed on Linux, read on! At time, if you develop a new application “Foo”, you as an upstream developer let other experienced people distribute your application in Linux-Distribution X through a package. Packaging an application is not as easy as some people think, a package of high quality requires some work. And the package wants to be maintained. The upstream -> downstream way we have at time works very nice, although ...
10.05.2009 Nick Shaforostoff (shaforostoff): Scripting Lokalize
I started working on scripting support in Lokalize several months ago, but never really announced this because I wanted to write my own scripts and refine/extend API accordingly along the way.KDE 4.3 will bring us 'officially' scriptable Lokalize. Among recent additions are new project wizard with anonsvn checkout support (screencast; it also checks out templates/ and scripts/ folders), actions to update .po from template and to compile .po into .mo and place it in local .kde folder so it could be picked up automatically by applications on the next start (see here and here for python sources)....
11.11.2010 Mike McQuaid (mikemcquaid): The Social Network: A Defense of Programming
I recently saw The Social Network, a dramatisation of the creation of Facebook. It was a thoroughly enjoyable film with brilliant direction, casting (Eisenberg and Timberlake in particular) and writing. It also had an incredibly realistic hacking seen (using wget and perl scripts) and featured KDE on the desktop of most of the programmers in the film. I highly recommend seeing it, regardless of your thoughts on Facebook. A friend sent me a link to an interesting review that I was writing a long response to but thought I’d turn it into a blog post instead. The review is fantastically writ...
17.05.2016 Embrace Open Source culture: the 5 common transformations.
Article originally published at Linedin on May 15th 2016. This is a story of what I have lived or witnessed a few times so far. A story of an organization that used to consume, develop and ship proprietary software for many years. At some point in time, management took the decision of using Open Source. Like in most cases, the decision was forced by its customers, providers, competitors... and by numbers.A painful but unavoidable transformation was required.1.- Open Source consumerEngineers had to learn a new system, adapt or re-write those features that used to made the organization unique, t...

23.11.2015 Game Art Quest Kickstarter!
Today an exciting new crowdfunding campaign kicks off! Nathan Lovato, the author of Game Design Quest, wants to create a new series of video tutorials on creating 2D game art with Krita. Nathan is doing this on his own, but the Krita project, through the Krita Foundation, really wants this to happen! Over to Nathan, introducing his campaign: “There are few learning resources dedicated to 2d game art. With Krita? Close to none. That is why I started working on Game Art Quest. This training will show you the techniques and concepts game artists use in their daily work. If you want to becom...
29.12.2015 Driving Akonadi Next from the command line
Christian recently blogged about a small command line tool that added to the client demo application a bunch of useful functionality for interacting with Akonadi Next from the command line. This inspired me to reach into my hard drive and pull out a bit of code I'd written for a side project of mine last year and turn up the Akonadi Next command line to 11. Say hello to akonadish. akonadish supports all the commands Christian wrote about, and adds: piping and file redirect of commands for More Unix(tm) able to be used in stand-alone scripts (#!/usr/bin/env akonadish style) an interactive shel...
05.12.2016 KDE Framworks 5 Content Snap Techno
In the previous post on Snapping KDE Applications we looked at the high-level implication and use of the KDE Frameworks 5 content snap to snapcraft snap bundles for binary distribution. Today I want to get a bit more technical and look at the actual building and inner workings of the content snap itself. The KDE Frameworks 5 snap is a content snap. Content snaps are really just ordinary snaps that define a content interface. Namely, they expose part or all of their file tree for use by another snap but otherwise can be regular snaps and have their own applications etc. KDE Frameworks 5’s...
24.03.2008 John Layt: Easter progress on printng
Well it's Easter, and rather than being somewhere warm or interesting (or both), I'm stuck here in cold and wet London. This is partly due to my own lack of organisation, but also due to some dodgy fraudster types who managed to clone my debit card and withdraw large sums of my cash from an ATM in Tunisia (I haven't even been there!). Ironic really, given the number of banking security projects I've worked on :-) Well the cash has been refunded, I've been waiting two weeks for the replacement card to arrive, and without easy access to cash I'm reluctant to board a plane or train to anywhere, ...
