Help Canonical Test GNOME Patches, Android Apps Illegally Tracking Kids, MySQL 8.0 Released and More

System & Utilities

Help Canonical test the GNOME desktop memory leak fixes in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS by downloading and installing the current daily ISO for your hardware from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/bionic-desktop-amd64.iso . Then download the patched version of gjs, install, reboot, and then just use your desktop normally.

26.01.2010 Sebastian Trueg (trueg): What We Did Last Summer (And the Rest of 2009) – A Look Back Onto the Nepomuk Development Year With an Obscenely Long Title
2009 is over. Yeah, sure, trueg, we know that, it has been over for a while now! Ok, ok, I am a bit late, but still I would like to get this one out – if only for my archive. So here goes. Virtuoso Let’s start with the major topic of 2009 (and also the beginning of 2010): The new Nepomuk database backend: Virtuoso. Everybody who used Nepomuk had the same problems: you either used the sesame2 backend which depends on Java and steals all of your memory or you were stuck with Redland which had the worst performance and missed some SPARQL features making important parts of Nepomuk  lik...
09.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): RE: Nine Improvements Needed in KDE, by Bruce Byfield
Dear Bruce ..Thanks for trying KDE 4.0.x and then writing about it. It's always great when people try something for a while and then give their honest opinion on things. I'd like to address some of the issues you raise, so let's start where you started:"A more customizable panel": the issues you note, from resizing and moving to not covering the toolbox, are already addressed in svn with the exception of autohiding which is currently partially working in a WIP patch. So this set of issues is more past tense than anything at this point. There remain some burrs to work out, such as not all widge...
12.06.2008 Roland Wolters (liquidat): Forth and back again - having a look at Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1beta
packages from kdeforge. KDE 4.0.x wasn’t an option because I wanted to have the KDE 4 PIM suite. The bad experiences However, the journey did not went as well as hoped. First of all Fedora itself did not boot up any faster. Of course I know that switching the init system itself doesn’t make the scripts go faster, but somehow I expected it to go at least a bit faster than maybe a minute. But the problems with the new KDE were more pressing: KDE froze X several times (Gnome didn’t), most often when the kerneloops popup tried to tell me something. This happened regularly after o...
19.01.2009 Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE 4.2 KPilot coming! (how to both be excited and have realistic expectations)
I just sent this to the KDE PIM mailing lists, but I know not everyone who uses KPilot subscribes, so I’ll re-post it here… Howdy all, I just wanted to get a note out to as wide a distribution list as possible to spread some important news about the upcoming KDE 4.2 release and KPilot’s (exciting!!) part in it. If you don’t care about KDE PIM, data syncing, Palm devices, or KPilot, you may stop reading now and I won’t be offended. =;P For the last 2 years, the talented Bertjan Broeksema and I have spent our Google Summer of Code months doing some major rework and ...
24.01.2010 Lim Yuen Hoe (moofang): The Web, the Desktop, and the Google between
I haven’t written a proper tech article since before I (re-)started this blog, so I thought it was high time. Besides, I’ve been wanting to write this post ever since I read some articles on Google’s Chrome OS, around the time right after my old blog vaporized. So there’s a couple of buzzwords to hopefully sucker you into clicking the ‘more’ button and actually reading the article – It’s about Google’s upcoming Chrome OS and it’s implications for the web, the desktop and the browser, as well as why desktop evolution can take an altern...
17.04.2011 There is still hope
My daughter of 1 year and 4 months died a week ago in a tragic car accident, so this time I’m going to mix Apper (KPackageKit), packagekit-qt2, aptcc, print-manager and religious in one blog post. Sorry if you don’t like religious things, you can skip it if you want but I hope this might help someone passing through a situation like this. (BTW there is an Open Source projects tag so planet.kde.org can filter the next ones). It’s been a while since my last post, since the end of the last year I’ve been preparing to move from Brazil to Argentina as my wife was studying t...
24.12.2008 Jonathan Riddell (riddell): UDS Jaunty and Desktop Experience
The Ubuntu Development Summit happened at Google the other week. Large numbers of people got together to spend a week discussing the next six months in Ubuntu. Lots of specs got written and you can find the Kubuntu Jaunty specs here. One of the most notable changes is the plan to change to using Package Kit, it's always a shame to move on from the hard work that has gone in before, but it makes the most sense for us to use a framework and apps that can be shared amongst many other distros. Hugs to Peter for work much appreciated. I'd like to see KDE 3 libs off the CD for Jaunty, and if possib...
17.05.2010 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): KDE SC 4.4.3 on OpenSolaris
It took some wrestling, but the EBN machine is back up, with some of the VMs up and running FreeBSD 8-STABLE. I’m still repairing the EBN itself, since that has many many more packages installed that need recompiling than the other VMs. There’s also Java to deal with — it may have become superfluous on the machine, but I need to sort that out or build by hand again (due to license restrictions, you still need to fetch Java distribution sources manually). In any case, with the server up and running again the KDE4-OpenSolaris folks could push their updates to our Mercurial Repo...
19.05.2011 SCIENCE, NOT FICTION
Hi KDE Community,             It’s my first post on the planet, so please don’t shoot me if something goes wrong :) Just week ago I come back form the Promo sprint in Southampton. It was a great experience and my first time I got in real touch with people behind KDE. Tons of work has been done, but you probably have read Justin’s post on the dot.             But this time I’m not going to talk about promo. Please, let me dig up a little bit about one of the most...
30.01.2018 Polishing Plasma 5.12
Igor Ljubuncic of Dedoimedo published his review of the Plasma 5.12 beta recently. As always, he’s very thorough, and points out out issues that keep Plasma from being A+ quality. A major part of our Usability and Productivity initiative is honestly acknowledging user feedback and criticism with humility instead of defensiveness or dismissal. That way, rather than engaging in pointless arguments, we can focus on fixing problems! With our aggressive focus on user satisfaction, we read these kinds of reviews very carefully and take their comments seriously. I wanted to provide a ...
