21.04.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Fear this fully operational battle station
The bug squad is doing impressive things. Just sorting through all the bugs is a big thing to do. As our range of platforms expands, this becomes a bigger job because the platform the bug may manifest on becomes more and more niche (or, for the KDE4 Windows ports, less niche but also less popular under the current set of developers). And I can appreciate the dedication of the bug squad because some bug reports and bug reporters are downright unpleasant. We get occasional angry ALL CAPS messages to the webmaster or sysadmin or somewhere else from bug reporters; there's not much to do about them...
14.11.2013 Responsible Evolution
Plasma Desktop running on top of Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5 Exciting times. I am working on the lower-right corner of the desktop right now, and thought I could give a quick visual update of progress there, as well as some sense of direction where we’re heading, how the user interface evolves, Plasma’s new architecture, and underlying software stack and the device spectrum. A whole mouthful, so grab a cup of tea. Two areas in particular are catching my attention these days, the notification area (“system tray”, that row of icons which show you the status of all kinds of ...
04.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): ++2009;
The first decade of the millennium (by our calendars, anyways :) is officially over and we're all going to have to get used to writing 2010 on things. I spent the last couple of weeks of 2009 taking a few personal days around the holidays as well as considering where we, KDE, have been and where we might be going. I wrote some notes at the end of it, and I thought I'd share some of it with all of you.We accomplished a lot in the last year, both as a community as well as personally. I'll leave the personal events, positive and difficult, to those who were involved, but try and cover some of the...
14.04.2009 Christian Weilbach (whilo): intel and the effects
Preamble: Haven’t blogged for a *long* time now. I was a bit disappointed because many people don’t take the issues about google monopolizing the web and accumulating information very serious. So I got either not or misread with my long thought about critics for GSoC. But then maybe this is the wrong attitude for open source projects which are there to be creative and not really critical… I’ll post about my thoughts later, for those who are interested in general discussion (uuhhh this smells like the p* word (yes politics ;-)) I also have a imho very good idea in peto t...
13.03.2013 openSUSE 12.3 is out!
Edit: So, now, really, the smoke is green and openSUSE 12.3 is out! It's been an interesting release cycle for me. It was my first full release cycle (ok, short one, just 6 months) with the new openSUSE team. Interesting ride. But today, it is party time. Tonight I will finally see the famous Artefakt as that's where the party will be - see the event here. Yay!In the last days we released three sneak previews of what's new in openSUSE 12.3, each getting a lot of reads and comments:For desktop users with a intro to GNOME (I'm new to that, still) and a series of more 'pro' tips for KDE apps as wel...
11.07.2016 Multi-screen woes in Plasma 5.7
With Plasma 5.7 we promised improved multi-screen support. While we achieved that, some users are still experiencing issues. This is unfortunate and our users have all the reasons to be disappointed with us. We are working very hard to fix the issues which have been reported to us since the release. But there are many situations where users blame us for issues not under our control. With this blog post I want to describe some of the problems we got reported and explain them. Display hardware key not working In Bug 365147 a user reported that the notebook hardware key does not work. This is rat...
07.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): in france
I'm in France right now. Toulouse, to be more precise. Kevin Ottens' (you may know him from Solid in KDE4) living room to be even more precise. It's 6:30 in the morning and Kevin and I are sitting here getting some work done early in the day so that we may go out a bit earlier in the afternoon to enjoy some of the city.I've already taken an ungodly number of pictures in my first day here as I play with my new toy: a Cannon EOS 400. I've never actually owned an SLR before, and there's much to learn, but I'm having fun with it. It's been great so far traveling with P.: we was awesome on the flig...
09.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): RE: Nine Improvements Needed in KDE, by Bruce Byfield
Dear Bruce ..Thanks for trying KDE 4.0.x and then writing about it. It's always great when people try something for a while and then give their honest opinion on things. I'd like to address some of the issues you raise, so let's start where you started:"A more customizable panel": the issues you note, from resizing and moving to not covering the toolbox, are already addressed in svn with the exception of autohiding which is currently partially working in a WIP patch. So this set of issues is more past tense than anything at this point. There remain some burrs to work out, such as not all widge...
04.03.2008 Roland Wolters (liquidat): Howto: Test the WebKit engine in Fedora
WebKit project where Apple still has quite some weight, but backend in GNOME’s Epiphany browser. However, at the moment most of these developments are not here yet. But Fedora’s WebKit packages come along with basic WebKit browsers which can be used to test some websites against WebKit: # rpm -qa|grep -i webkit WebKit-doc-1.0.0-0.3.svn28482.fc8 WebKit-gtk-devel-1.0.0-0.3.svn28482.fc8 WebKit-qt-devel-1.0.0-0.3.svn28482.fc8 WebKit-qt-1.0.0-0.3.svn28482.fc8 rpm WebKit-gtk-1.0.0-0.3.svn28482.fc8 # rpm -ql WebKit-qt /usr/lib/libQtWebKit.so.1 /usr/lib/libQtWebKit.so.1.0 /usr/lib/libQt...
12.06.2008 Roland Wolters (liquidat): Forth and back again - having a look at Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1beta
packages from kdeforge. KDE 4.0.x wasn’t an option because I wanted to have the KDE 4 PIM suite. The bad experiences However, the journey did not went as well as hoped. First of all Fedora itself did not boot up any faster. Of course I know that switching the init system itself doesn’t make the scripts go faster, but somehow I expected it to go at least a bit faster than maybe a minute. But the problems with the new KDE were more pressing: KDE froze X several times (Gnome didn’t), most often when the kerneloops popup tried to tell me something. This happened regularly after o...
