03.12.2017 Syntax Highlighting Checker
The KTextEditor Framework uses the syntax highlighting files provided by the KSyntaxHighlighting Framework since the  KDE Frameworks release 5.28. The KSyntaxHighlighting Framework implements Kate’s highlighting system and meanwhile is used in quite some applications (e.g. LabPlot, KDE PIM). What is quite nice is that the KSyntaxHighlighting framework is nicely unit tested. And while we do not have tests for all highlighting files, we still provide some quality assurance through a compile time checker. How does it work? Well – in former times, Kate loaded all highlighting .xml...
29.03.2008 Christian Wellbach: GSoC 2
This subject is complex. If you expect simple answers, go and find them somewhere else. As I have known before, I have been misunderstood in many ways with my last post. Therefore I would like to do a small analysis on my criticism and some additions to get the most important points clearer and finally I would like to ask why I have been misunderstood. Hopefully this will be enlightening. I am egoistic I have read that I am pessimistic and that not all is that bad. Google may profit and KDE profits from GSoC, too. My criticism is one-sided. My criticism is not constructive either and why am I...
31.07.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): KDE4 on other platforms
[[ This post mostly inspired by a Ars Technica has some kind words for it, where Ryan Paul has been (justifiably) highly critical in the past. But what about non-Linux? Consider the developer base for KDE. I'd guess that it is about 95% Linux users. That's just a guess and I don't know of any effective way to refine that guess, but based on who I know within the community, I feel that's reasonable. So, working with that guess: of the 240 committers the last
03.03.2008 Thiago Macieira (thiago): Many new Qt releases
The former former Release Manager had a saying: The release is not out until you blog about it So I’m doing a 3-in-1 blog! Qt 4.3 A week and a half ago, we released old news now (even though it’s only my first beta for Qt 4.4, containing a lot of new features, like backends, Qt Concurrent, improved printing support, Aliens, a lot that Trolltech have blogging Qt/Embedded for Windows CE. It’s now the fifth platform that Qt supports, after X11, Windows, Mac and Embedded Linux (QWS). It’s the result of a year and a half of work done mostly by the Trolltech Berlin office, tr...
19.01.2009 Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE 4.2 KPilot coming! (how to both be excited and have realistic expectations)
I just sent this to the KDE PIM mailing lists, but I know not everyone who uses KPilot subscribes, so I’ll re-post it here… Howdy all, I just wanted to get a note out to as wide a distribution list as possible to spread some important news about the upcoming KDE 4.2 release and KPilot’s (exciting!!) part in it. If you don’t care about KDE PIM, data syncing, Palm devices, or KPilot, you may stop reading now and I won’t be offended. =;P For the last 2 years, the talented Bertjan Broeksema and I have spent our Google Summer of Code months doing some major rework and ...
23.01.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 Review From Inside Out. Part 2: Applications
PrologueI didn't expect the previous part of this review to be so popular. Huge thanks to everyone who read, linked and commented it!I know I promised you to write about KDE4 applications, so without further ado, here is the continuation.Table of Contents:DolphinKonquerorKonsoleKMailAkregatorKGetGwenview and OkularGrand ConclusionDolphinI'd like to start my applications review with Dolphin, as it was the most prominent change in the applications area. It was planned to make Dolphin the default file manager since KDE3, but I never tried it then. I got Dolphin with 4.1 and started using it.Proba...

06.04.2008 Benjamin Meyer (icefox): Demo browser update
Qt 4.4 release candidate is now out. Sense beta1 I have been spending a most my weekends hacking on the demo browser and there are many improvements in this release.BookmarksThe first new feature is bookmarks. Using the same open standard format at Konqueror, I have two little classes that can read and write the XBel format. These class use the QXmlStreamReader and QXmlStreamWriter so they are super fast. Similarly to History there is a base bookmarks class and on top of it a model that is used in the menu, bookmarks dialog, add bookmark dialog, and in the bookmark toolbar. Lastly there is an ...
04.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): ++2009;
The first decade of the millennium (by our calendars, anyways :) is officially over and we're all going to have to get used to writing 2010 on things. I spent the last couple of weeks of 2009 taking a few personal days around the holidays as well as considering where we, KDE, have been and where we might be going. I wrote some notes at the end of it, and I thought I'd share some of it with all of you.We accomplished a lot in the last year, both as a community as well as personally. I'll leave the personal events, positive and difficult, to those who were involved, but try and cover some of the...
28.02.2010 Celeste Paul (seele): Using Tabs in the Taskbar: Improving Desktop-Application Integration, Visual Hierarchy, and Usability in KDE
A few weeks ago I spent some time thinking about one of the issues I am becoming increasingly concerned about as we focus more on the KDE Desktop and less on KDE applications: the growing separation between the Desktop and the application windows in the environment. As Plasma becomes more and more sophisticated, the gap between the Desktop and the environment grows. The two pieces do not look the same, do not behave same, do not provide the same types of interactions, and user interface design conventions are diverging. The Desktop and rest of the application environment are starting to become...
