17.04.2008 Richard Dale: A Ruby Plasma Data Engine based on DBPedia SPARQL queries
I've been playing with using KIO::get() to make queries on the DBPedia SPARQL endpoint, parse the XML result set and convert it to be used by a Plasma Data Engine. I'll explain how it works as I think it is pretty useful and makes it very easy to link up applets with Semantic Web/Desktop data. This is the basic SPARQL query, it takes the name of an artist and retrieves details of all the albums they've made - the album name, the urn of the album's DBPedia resource, creation date and cover art picture: PREFIX p: <http://dbpedia.org/property/> PREFIX rdf: <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22...
02.03.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): Plasma Packages
Here's another of the topics I was going to show in the screencast: Packages. The test case was getting Apple's Dashboard Widgets to work out of the box. The rules were that we couldn't adjust any of the Plasma infrastructure at all .. it has to all work with Packages and ScriptEngines. This meant changing and improving a few things in those parts of Plasma but the result was .. well, let's take a look:In the Add Widgets dialog the Install New Widgets button is now a menu, letting you choose between downloading from the Internet using GetHotNewStuff and DXS (where what you are about to see is ...
15.10.2010 Richard Dale: SPARQL queries in QML with QSparql
We've been working on QSparql for a few months now, and I feel it is starting to be something that could be used by a wider audience. It is a simple QSql-like library for accessing various RDF stores such as KDE's Nepomuk data in Virtuoso, SPARQL endpoints on the web via HTTP, and Gnome or MeeGo Nepomuk data in Tracker stores. It differs from Soprano in that it is much smaller and lower level, and it is asynchronous and uses Qt slot callbacks by default, whereas Soprano is usually a synchronous style api. SPARQL is a complex query language, although if you are already familiar with SQL, it sho...
14.11.2013 Responsible Evolution
Plasma Desktop running on top of Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5 Exciting times. I am working on the lower-right corner of the desktop right now, and thought I could give a quick visual update of progress there, as well as some sense of direction where we’re heading, how the user interface evolves, Plasma’s new architecture, and underlying software stack and the device spectrum. A whole mouthful, so grab a cup of tea. Two areas in particular are catching my attention these days, the notification area (“system tray”, that row of icons which show you the status of all kinds of ...
26.01.2010 Sebastian Trueg (trueg): What We Did Last Summer (And the Rest of 2009) – A Look Back Onto the Nepomuk Development Year With an Obscenely Long Title
2009 is over. Yeah, sure, trueg, we know that, it has been over for a while now! Ok, ok, I am a bit late, but still I would like to get this one out – if only for my archive. So here goes. Virtuoso Let’s start with the major topic of 2009 (and also the beginning of 2010): The new Nepomuk database backend: Virtuoso. Everybody who used Nepomuk had the same problems: you either used the sesame2 backend which depends on Java and steals all of your memory or you were stuck with Redland which had the worst performance and missed some SPARQL features making important parts of Nepomuk  lik...
31.10.2011 Plasma PublicTransport
Public Transport Data in a KDE Plasma DesktopI'm Friedrich Pülz and this is my first blog ;) To introduce myself: I'm studying informatics in Bremen, Germany and I'm the author of the PublicTransport project among others (eg. KrossWordPuzzle game, Glucose plasma applet for diabetics). The PublicTransport applet in action for a german stop Motivation   I started the PublicTransport project (a single Plasma applet at that time) because I was annoyed at using websites of public transport service providers. To get a list of journeys you have to open up a browser, navigate to the serv...
05.04.2008 Richard Dale: Ruby Clock Plasma Applet
We can't have too many plasma clocks in KDE4, and I'm pleased to say that the Ruby analog clock is now working pretty well. I've been using it to time brewing a pot of tea this morning, and there is certainly a more delicate taste to Earl Grey timed with a Ruby clock as opposed the the slightly coarser and more acidic flavour that using a C++ based clock applet as a timer, can give to your cuppa. The clock code is in playground/base/plasma/applets/ruby-clock, and I'll explain how it all fits together. It has a Qt designer .ui file, that is identical to the one used by the C++ analog clock, for...
14.04.2008 Richard Dale: Writing Plasma Data Engines in Ruby
It sounds as though exciting things are happening at the Milan Tokamak Plasma sprint, with an api review and the Widgets on Canvas changes happening at the moment. Meanwhile, I've been having my own 'mini-sprint' this last week in Gran Canaria. I've ported the digital clock as well as the
21.08.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): associating widgets with mimetypes
One of the neat features in Plasma is the ability to associated widgets with mimetypes. To associate a widget with a mimetype, you add a X-Plasma-DropMimeTypes key to the .desktop file for the widget. For instance, the picture frame widget has this in its .desktop file:X-Plasma-DropMimeTypes=image/jpeg,image/pngWhen I drop an image file onto the desktop, I get asked if I'd like to make a picture frame or an icon out of it. In 4.2, I can also drop raw image data onto the desktop and it does the same (except it doesn't give the option to create an icon for it as it isn't actually a file). The way ...
27.08.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): KTorrent + Plasma = Good Times
I just found out today that KTorrent ships with a DataEngine and Plasmoid. (Yes, sometimes I'm a bit slow. ;) Now I can watch my torrents progress without having to keep popping up the KTorrent window. Nice! This inspired me to do a little bit of hacking on the applet this evening. When the icon is clicked, it now pops up the KTorrent window and if you drop an entry from KTorrent to the desktop KTorrent plasmoid is created.Since KTorrent already has drag and drop support internally, all I had to do to get plasmoid creation working was add one line to the plasma-applet-ktorrent.desktop file: X-P...
