15.03.2016 3.0 Pre-alpha 3 is out!
Today was an important day for the Krita project! We entered feature freeze! That means that from now on until the release of Krita 3.0, which is planned for April 27th, we won’t be working on adding new features, but we’ll be fixing bugs, fixing bugs and fixing more bugs! If you want to help us identify and triage bugs, read this article: “Ways to Help Krita: Bug Triaging“. It’s the first of what’s intended to be a series of reference articles on ways to help Krita grow and become better and better. Since Krita 3.0 is frozen, we know exactly which Kickstart...
11.07.2016 Multi-screen woes in Plasma 5.7
With Plasma 5.7 we promised improved multi-screen support. While we achieved that, some users are still experiencing issues. This is unfortunate and our users have all the reasons to be disappointed with us. We are working very hard to fix the issues which have been reported to us since the release. But there are many situations where users blame us for issues not under our control. With this blog post I want to describe some of the problems we got reported and explain them. Display hardware key not working In Bug 365147 a user reported that the notebook hardware key does not work. This is rat...
25.01.2016 New Year Calligra Words Sprint
When the streets are covered with snow and ice in many parts of Europe, it’s a good time to sit inside in front of our computers and to improve that software we are sharing here with each other. With the porting of the apps, plugins & libs part of Calligra to Qt5/KF5 roughly done towards the end of 2015, it is now also a good time to work on features again. Given a few Calligra developers interested in improving the text-handling modules, we looked into doing a developer meeting (a.k.a. “sprint”) on that quickly, and given January being a good candidate for snow and ice o...
08.02.2016 HIG about Simple vs. Advanced Settings
KDE Project: UsabilityRecently the question was asked in the KDE forums how we handle advanced settings. While there is neither a best practice nor a common approach in KDE software, we actually discussed a similar concept in respect to the Plasma control modules (KCM). The updated organization of KCMs was implemented by the developers, the community decided about the basic layout, and a couple of proposals were done [1, 2]. So why don't generalize this idea and write a guideline? The following guideline proposal not only recapitulates what we considered for the KCM but also introduces some n...
14.06.2016 Working on KDevelop and KDE on Windows in Randa
Right now, around 40 developers are working together on bringing KDE to other platforms in Randa (Switzerland) for an entire week. I just arrived Sunday evening, and we immediately started with discussions around KDE on different platforms. Not much coding has happened yesterday evening yet, but I at least managed to work-around a compiler bug of GCC 4.8 showing up in the KDevelop code base. My plans for this week are as follows: Preparing the KDevelop 5.0 release (fixing release blockers) Introduce the Windows CI for KDE (means: adding a Jenkins Windows slave to build.kde.org, making it pro...
10.05.2016 Community Bonding – KDE – WikiToLearn
WikiToLearn   On May 5th night, we had a hangout call with our project mentors and other GSoC students of WikiToLearn team. This is the first hangout call we had with respect to GSoC. We discussed the following things : * Having a blog account and keep updating the progress in it. Also to find a way to mirror our blog and WikiToLearn wiki page to keep track of everything. * Gianluca explained about the need of KDE account, Phabricator. * All our current source code are hosted on Github, we may move to KDE QuickGit someday soon. * We discussed our project proposals. We felt it will ...
19.07.2016 System Settings help needed
First of all I need help, but before you help me I’d like to show you what a user without development skills can do to make plasma better. I already post about the system settings redesign and cause developer are busy with other tasks, I reviewed the existing modules and update them to fit (more) our vision. I know it’s not how I would prefere in the end but I did the changes without development skills (no compiling, no new code). I use qt-creator for edit the ui files and play around with qml. The Mouse cursor theme was updated, by move the buttons to bottom as in most other kcm&#...
