11.07.2016 Multi-screen woes in Plasma 5.7
With Plasma 5.7 we promised improved multi-screen support. While we achieved that, some users are still experiencing issues. This is unfortunate and our users have all the reasons to be disappointed with us. We are working very hard to fix the issues which have been reported to us since the release. But there are many situations where users blame us for issues not under our control. With this blog post I want to describe some of the problems we got reported and explain them. Display hardware key not working In Bug 365147 a user reported that the notebook hardware key does not work. This is rat...
09.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): RE: Nine Improvements Needed in KDE, by Bruce Byfield
Dear Bruce ..Thanks for trying KDE 4.0.x and then writing about it. It's always great when people try something for a while and then give their honest opinion on things. I'd like to address some of the issues you raise, so let's start where you started:"A more customizable panel": the issues you note, from resizing and moving to not covering the toolbox, are already addressed in svn with the exception of autohiding which is currently partially working in a WIP patch. So this set of issues is more past tense than anything at this point. There remain some burrs to work out, such as not all widge...
17.04.2008 Richard Dale: A Ruby Plasma Data Engine based on DBPedia SPARQL queries
I've been playing with using KIO::get() to make queries on the DBPedia SPARQL endpoint, parse the XML result set and convert it to be used by a Plasma Data Engine. I'll explain how it works as I think it is pretty useful and makes it very easy to link up applets with Semantic Web/Desktop data. This is the basic SPARQL query, it takes the name of an artist and retrieves details of all the albums they've made - the album name, the urn of the album's DBPedia resource, creation date and cover art picture: PREFIX p: <http://dbpedia.org/property/> PREFIX rdf: <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22...
11.06.2008 Troy Unrau: Checking up on old articles, for shits and giggles; Praise for Polish Linux's KDE articles
So today I was reading the Polish Linux article, part of a series that is periodically covered KDE from SVN (to the delight and occasional flaming of many fans) and it reminded me of how I ended up with this Marketing thing in the first place. It's been just under a year since my last Road to KDE 4 articles went live, and for shits and giggles, I thought I'd revisit them to see what has held together through the last year, what ended up as vapour, and so forth -- For my amusement more than anything else, although it might be interesting to some. So I present...The Road [From] KDE 4[.0]My very ...
12.06.2008 Roland Wolters (liquidat): Forth and back again - having a look at Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1beta
packages from kdeforge. KDE 4.0.x wasn’t an option because I wanted to have the KDE 4 PIM suite. The bad experiences However, the journey did not went as well as hoped. First of all Fedora itself did not boot up any faster. Of course I know that switching the init system itself doesn’t make the scripts go faster, but somehow I expected it to go at least a bit faster than maybe a minute. But the problems with the new KDE were more pressing: KDE froze X several times (Gnome didn’t), most often when the kerneloops popup tried to tell me something. This happened regularly after o...
13.11.2017 Latte Dock v0.7.2 arrives in KDE and Kubuntu backports PPA
Latte Dock, the very popular doc/panel app for Plasma Desktop, has released its new bugfix version 0.7.2. This is also the first stable release since Latte Dock became an official KDE project at the end of August.     Version 0.7.1 was added to our backports PPA in a previous round of backports for Kubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark. Today that has been updated to 0.7.2, and a build added for Kubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus users. The PPA can be enabled by adding the following repository to your software sources list: ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports or if it is already added, the updates should beco...
30.01.2018 Polishing Plasma 5.12
Igor Ljubuncic of Dedoimedo published his review of the Plasma 5.12 beta recently. As always, he’s very thorough, and points out out issues that keep Plasma from being A+ quality. A major part of our Usability and Productivity initiative is honestly acknowledging user feedback and criticism with humility instead of defensiveness or dismissal. That way, rather than engaging in pointless arguments, we can focus on fixing problems! With our aggressive focus on user satisfaction, we read these kinds of reviews very carefully and take their comments seriously. I wanted to provide a ...
20.03.2018 KDE Connect – State of the union
Hey there! We haven’t blogged about KDE Connect in a long time, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve been lazy. Some new people have joined the project and together we have implemented some exciting features. Our last post was about version 1.0, but recently we released version 1.8 of the Android app and 1.2.1 of the desktop component some time ago, which we did not blog about yet. Until now! We got some fancy new features in place: Remote Keyboard plugin I think most of us can agree that typing long texts on the phone sucks compared to typing on a proper keyboard. Before, you co...
30.04.2018 Volume Control in KDE Connect
Definitely one of the best use cases of KDE Connect is this: Watching a movie while laying in bed or on the couch and controlling your unreachable computer from your phone without needing to stand up. Thanks to our new media control notification you can pause and skip without even unlocking your phone. But what if the movie is too silent? If your media player is implementing the MPRIS2 specifications you are already lucky and can control your players volume from KDE Connect. Plasma Browser Integration even adds that for Browsers. But what if your player doesn’t support it (looking at you...
11.01.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 Review From Inside Out. Part 1
PrologueIt's probably the first time in my life when I'm writing a post with a word "Review", but looks like it's a perfect time to start doing that. Right now I desperately need to tell the world about KDE4, or to be precise, soon to be released KDE 4.2. This is going to be the first "real" release targeted not only at KDE developers and enthusiasts, but at general public - all the people who eagerly waited for the next KDE desktop to arrive. With this review I'd like to let people know that the KDE 4 is ready and to once again celebrate the hard work of all the people who put tremendous effo...
