07.03.2008 Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: Nearing first alpha, and lots of cool new stuff
Its been little while since I wrote a nice long update about the state of Amarok 2, and we have been getting a few complaints that there is not enough ews being posted, so I will try to remedy that here. And I have a nice pile of screenshots ready for you! First up though, we have decided to put a feature freeze in effect starting at the end of this month. This is the first small step towards an eventual release of Amarok 2.0, and hopefully it will help us get it ready sooner rather than later. This also means that we are at the point where bug reports actually start to become useful. More o...
25.06.2008 Troy Unrau: A quick survey of KDE 4 Apps
So I spent the last few days rebuilding trunk and playing with some of the applications that don't ship on the same release cycles as KDE itself. Things like Amarok, KOffice, KTorrent, K3b, and more. So I figured I'd give a few comments on how the development of these things are going, especially KOffice 2. So, some thoughts on those applications that make the KDE environment the integrated, wonderful thing that a only full desktop environment can give.Amarok 2 gets enough press, they don't need me to talk up how the cover downloading works now, or how I actually have to come up with new ways ...
15.03.2016 3.0 Pre-alpha 3 is out!
Today was an important day for the Krita project! We entered feature freeze! That means that from now on until the release of Krita 3.0, which is planned for April 27th, we won’t be working on adding new features, but we’ll be fixing bugs, fixing bugs and fixing more bugs! If you want to help us identify and triage bugs, read this article: “Ways to Help Krita: Bug Triaging“. It’s the first of what’s intended to be a series of reference articles on ways to help Krita grow and become better and better. Since Krita 3.0 is frozen, we know exactly which Kickstart...
10.05.2008 Robert Knight: Singing in tune
Tom and keynote at Akademy 2007. The relevant section starts around 30:00 and in the questions at 42:00. There was more to his argument than just "release every 6 months". The exact time delay was a detail, albeit an important one. For the benefit of those who weren't there and perhaps also those who were, I'll summarize his points:Regular, predictable releases which are synced with appropriate other projects provide a sense of rhythm and structure. It allows projects up/down and across-stream to plan better and co-operate more efficiently. If distributors believe they can trust KDE's release s...
30.12.2008 Chani Armitage (Chani): adventures in plasmaland, part 1
huzzah! I finally fixed all of plasma-overlay’s known bugs, and made the config ui actually work :) it only took a couple of days to round up the last few things, surprisingly. now I finally have the option to write code that is *not* bugfixes for my damn soc project. I think it’s about time I did some fun little plasmoids instead of working on big crazy things. yes, we’re in feature freeze, but I’ve been bugfixing for 4 damn months :P I need a break. I have a ton of ideas for small, (hopefully) simple plasmoids and I want to try them out. I also thought it’d be f...
23.01.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 Review From Inside Out. Part 2: Applications
PrologueI didn't expect the previous part of this review to be so popular. Huge thanks to everyone who read, linked and commented it!I know I promised you to write about KDE4 applications, so without further ado, here is the continuation.Table of Contents:DolphinKonquerorKonsoleKMailAkregatorKGetGwenview and OkularGrand ConclusionDolphinI'd like to start my applications review with Dolphin, as it was the most prominent change in the applications area. It was planned to make Dolphin the default file manager since KDE3, but I never tried it then. I got Dolphin with 4.1 and started using it.Proba...
10.05.2008 Sebastian Kuegler: Are we breathing in the same rhythm?
Aaron discuss timing and release schedules, and development cycles. Aaron talks about trunk/ and freezes therein should follow a natural lifecycle. This assumes that the whole KDE community lives and breathes as one individual, synchronised and all. So a development-and-release-cycle forces all developers into one rhythm. Everyone has to follow this one release rhythm. It's a good idea, but I think we should also make the lives of those that choose another breathing ryhthm. There are a couple of things to consider here. The most obvious being that we need this flexibility anyway. We rely on ce...
14.07.2010 Jonathan Thomas (JontheEchidna): QApt and Muon 0.3 (1.0 alpha2)
I’m proud to announce the second alpha of both LibQApt and Muon. (For an intro to those who may be seeing this for the first time, read my previous blog post) Packages will be in the same location as before, but are not yet ready. It seems that the PPA service builders have a backlog on the magnitude of 1956 jobs, and won’t get to LibQApt or Muon for another 48 hours. Tarballs can be found here and here, for QApt and Muon respectively. Bugs are now being tracked at bugs.kde.org (as opposed to in blog comments ). To report a bug in either LibQApt or Muon, you can now use the R...
16.03.2008 Matt Rogers (mattr): get your features in
The planned feature list for KDE 4.1 closes on April 7th. If you haven’t added your features to the feature list yet (/me looks at the plasma folks. your roadmap on techbase doesn’t count, AFAIK), you need to be doing that so that you don’t run the risk of having your changes reverted once the soft feature freeze goes into effect (also on April 7th). Sorry to the plasma folks for picking on them a bit, but i just read about the roadmap before checking the feature plan and noticing no plasma items on said feature plan.
03.04.2008 Thiago Macieira (thiago): Qt 4.4 Release Candidate is out
Exactly one month ago, I blogged about Qt 4.4.0 Release Candidate, which you can readily download from our FTP servers and mirrors in the Open Source version, or from the commercial distribution server for our commercial licensees. This is the last scheduled step before the final release. If all goes well, we’ll have the final packages out the door in more or less a month. In the mean time, our team will be resting and doing nothing… Wait, no, just kidding. As the name says, this is a release that we consider to be of release quality. While we still have a few outstanding issues ...
