17.12.2009 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): the pulse
December is almost always a hard month for me. Besides the seasonal brinkmanship with depression that I struggle with as the days dwindle away (something I liked a bit better about living closer to the equator in the past was not having to deal with that) it often seems to come with its own stew of drama. Some years are decidedly harder than others, and thankfully this one is somewhere in the middle of the pack. I'm looking forward to spending the holidays at my sister's (for the first time ever we'll get to do the Christmas thing together!) and things are looking like they are all coming toge...
08.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): key quest: deployability
Deployability. Is that even a word? :) I love it for how ambiguous it is, even though it's pretty obvious what it probably refers to. So what exactly was I thinking about when I put "Deployability" on my list?It is a potentially big topic. We could end up discussing user/group profile management and how we still don't have a KDE4 GUI configuration front end for Kiosk, like that KDE3 KioskTool, to make setting up such systems easier. (Side note: good news on the Plasma Desktop front! In KDE SC 4.4 will support all the Kiosk keys that KDesktop/Kicker used to respect.) While we certainly need som...
24.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): gwenview: user friendly?
Carla Schroder wrote an editorial piece this week on Linux Today (a website I enjoy and frequent daily via their RSS feeds) entitled Editor's Note: What is User-friendly, Really?. In it, Carla claims to be "90% satisfied" with KDE3 and "60% satisfied" with KDE SC 4.3. Why? "KDE 4 sacrifices customizability and efficiency for glitz. [...] There is a trend to dumb Linux down in a fruitless attempt to appeal to Jane and Joe Sixpack. Which is wasted effort, because in doing so computer-savvy users are being ignored and frustrated, and Jane and Joe Sixpack don't care anyway." What's interesting ab...
22.06.2008 Stephan Binner (Beineri): openSUSE 11.0: Press Review
openSUSE 11.0 was a big success and positive ars technica: This is a very strong OpenSUSE release with a lot of compelling improvements. OpenSUSE 11 offers the best KDE 4 experience out there and will continue to be our reference distribution for KDE testing.
11.05.2008 Bram Schoenmakers: Best branching practices with git-svn
git-svn is a wonderful tool. It allows me to have the flexibility of Git in a Subversion environment. One downside I Flavio Castelli's posting is a nice introduction. Branching To prevent hassle later on, it is recommended to start a branch from a commit which is already written back to SVN. Consider the following histories (where lowercase characters are commits already in SVN and uppercase characters are local commits in your Git repository): o---a---B master                     C---O topic and o--...
11.06.2008 Troy Unrau: Checking up on old articles, for shits and giggles; Praise for Polish Linux's KDE articles
So today I was reading the Polish Linux article, part of a series that is periodically covered KDE from SVN (to the delight and occasional flaming of many fans) and it reminded me of how I ended up with this Marketing thing in the first place. It's been just under a year since my last Road to KDE 4 articles went live, and for shits and giggles, I thought I'd revisit them to see what has held together through the last year, what ended up as vapour, and so forth -- For my amusement more than anything else, although it might be interesting to some. So I present...The Road [From] KDE 4[.0]My very ...
11.01.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 Review From Inside Out. Part 1
PrologueIt's probably the first time in my life when I'm writing a post with a word "Review", but looks like it's a perfect time to start doing that. Right now I desperately need to tell the world about KDE4, or to be precise, soon to be released KDE 4.2. This is going to be the first "real" release targeted not only at KDE developers and enthusiasts, but at general public - all the people who eagerly waited for the next KDE desktop to arrive. With this review I'd like to let people know that the KDE 4 is ready and to once again celebrate the hard work of all the people who put tremendous effo...
23.01.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 Review From Inside Out. Part 2: Applications
PrologueI didn't expect the previous part of this review to be so popular. Huge thanks to everyone who read, linked and commented it!I know I promised you to write about KDE4 applications, so without further ado, here is the continuation.Table of Contents:DolphinKonquerorKonsoleKMailAkregatorKGetGwenview and OkularGrand ConclusionDolphinI'd like to start my applications review with Dolphin, as it was the most prominent change in the applications area. It was planned to make Dolphin the default file manager since KDE3, but I never tried it then. I got Dolphin with 4.1 and started using it.Proba...
24.03.2009 Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): What's up with Lion Mail?
With an Akonadi sprint in Berlin coming up, I thought I'd write a couple of lines for those who are interested in some PIM stuff in Plasma. Lion Mail is a Plasmoid that shows information about emails. It can be used to display for example unread emails in a popup in Plasma. Lion Mail is much more powerful than that though. Lion Mail can load various collections, and handle them as independant applets or groups of applets on the desktop. It uses Plasma's extenders which provide support for detaching parts of an applet. Lion Mail offers in fact two Plasmoids. The Lion Mail applet groups emails ...
22.04.2009 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): kaizen and kakushin
I read Mark Shuttleworth's blog entry about meta-cycles this evening and was taken back in my mind to an entry I wrote in September of 2007 about Toyota. My issue with the "6 month cycle" has always been three-fold: the number 6 is a project specific detail and should not be pushed on every project because it won't fit every project (Mark notes he works on projects with 1, 3 and 6 month cycles; other cycle are also possible, of course); what we're really talking about it timed releases made with a relatively high level of consistencyThe discussion is often coupled with the idea of coordinating ...
