15.01.2009 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): building a community around your F/OSS project
Today has turned into another writing day for me. Huzzah! I started going through my list of blog-posts-I've-not-yet-written and decided to punctuate the day with a couple of them. So let's talk a bit about building a community around your F/OSS project.Usual disclaimers apply: this is what works for me, it may not work for you; I could be completely insane and talking about my posterior; I probably am just repeating what other people have said elsewhere; I'm going to be hypocritical in places by giving advice that I don't follow overly well myself. So there.Onwards! Why It MattersIt is not unc...
02.10.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): on the impending future of ui greatnesses
What a title for a blog entry, huh? Well, it's rather tongue in cheek on the one hand, and almost serious on the other.Lions, Tigers and Cloud HTML5 .. oh my!I've written about this from various points of view before, and I just love Larry Ellison's response to a question about "the cloud", but it bears repeating and looking at the core issues from different angles because people continue to find themselves confused on the matter. This time we'll look at it from the perspective of "form factors are not programming languages".Reality is that well over 300 million new desktops and laptops are so...

01.02.2012 Meet Spark, the a 200 slate packing Linux-based Plasma Active UX
As we all know, the Kindle Fire's hot , Apple's selling bushels of iPads , and there's plenty of Honeycomb slates out there for you to choose from, but what if you want a tablet free from corporate influence? Enter Spark, a seven-inch slate that comes running the Plasma Active UX, an open-source OS based on Linux kernel, KDE's multi-platform Plasma ... (more)
03.01.2013 Components Growing
Looking past the irony that QML will be available for all platforms but WP8 in the short-term, and Nokias previous involvement in the development of QML, it is nice to see the platforms being created. The last in the row is Ubuntu Phone, others are Jolla’s Sailfish, RIM’s BB10 Cascades, KDE’s Plasma and Nokia’s Components for Harmattan and Symbian. Qt seem to unlock the future UIs for devices. What is striking is the interaction patterns being established. Nokia Swipe, Sailfish as well as Ubuntu Phone seems to rely heavily on swiping from the sides of the screen. T...
07.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): key quests for kde in 2010?
In my last blog entry about 2009 achievements and events I said that I had a "looking forward" entry to come this week. This is the start of that entry, or rather, entries. As I was working on it, it became apparent that it was a big big for one entry. Yes, even too long for me. ;) I also realized that having a list of topics in one blog entry was probably going to lead to chaos in the comments section. The solution seemed evident: address each topic up in it's own small blog entry and publish them in sequence over the course of several days. So that is what I am going to do.What is my goal / ...
06.03.2010 Markus Slopianka (markuss): Oh dear! Qt incompatibility on the horizon
I’ve read through a lengthy thread in the official Meamo forum (it’s so long, I even forgot how I even got there *g*). Basically it says: The Symbian Foundation and Nokia with Maemo (now MeeGo) are building two widget sets on top of QGraphicsView – while both are called Direct UI, they are entirely different (I’ll refer to them as SDUI and MDUI from now on). Symbian Foundation employee Mark Wilcox is the one who seems to see the seriousness the most that it’s totally braindead to have incompatibe widget sets. Ironically MDUI seems to be the portable one. Hopefully the F...
15.04.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): come together
Reading planet.kde.org the last few days has been great. There have been several great blogs about akademy.br, a regional Brazilian KDE event that kicked off this year with its first installment. It looks like they did a great job with it and I can't wait to see next year's event. The number (and quality!) of regional KDE events just keeps growing: Akademy.es, Camp KDE, Akademy.br. This is an interesting evolution from KDE only participating as part of other conferences (something we still do, believe in and get a lot out of), through to Akademy growing up as our own themed conference to an in...
