Plasma 5 Powers KaOS Productivity

System & Utilities

The KaOS Linux distro is a very efficient Linux distribution built around a refined KDE desktop environment that just keeps getting better. The KDE integration is much more controlled than you will find in other Linux choices.

22.04.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Gaming the system
Or, as a good subtitle: "the assertion that metrics-based software development is stupid." I've got a nice article somewhere in a Communications of the ACM about software metrics. And how using those metrics to drive development or evaluate performance is generally a bad idea. Generally. Not always. Much of it comes down to "gaming the system", which I suppose I had best define as: In "gaming the system" the "system" refers to a system of a process and some measurement on that process and a rewards scheme based on the measurements; "gaming" is the practice of performing actions that result in...
15.09.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): On KDE4 Performance
Andreas Pakulat recently blogged about performance issues with KDE 4.1 on his new desktop system. While I agree with some of the comments on that blog entry that his blog would've been better off on the kde-devel or even the kde-core-devel mailing list, since he's uncorked the genie I figured I may as well offer some commentary on the matter for the blogosphere. It's probably useful since it's an issue a lot of people are running into, and it's not fun when you do.A Line in the SandFirst, I'd like to discuss what constitutes an acceptable experience with KDE 4. There will always be some things...
23.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): key quest: webkit
The list of "Key Quests for 2010" was alphabetical. It was a sensible ordering and it prevented me from having to prioritize them in some linear fashion that could never be definitive anyways: all the points are important, though often in different ways, for different reasons and even with different key audiences. So, alphabetical ordering it was! This meant that WebKit was going to be the last topic, and now here we are. (Honestly, I'm glad I'll be able to get back to more "stream of consciousness, spur of the moment" blogging! :)The topic of WebKit is not the easiest one. It's had its share ...
29.04.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): Plasma and Google Summer o' Code
Yes, this is the now customary "we have students in GSoC for our project" posting for Plasma. First, though, some updates on the scripting session from yesterday: Jonathan Riddel has posted logs of the meeting (thanks Jonathan! :); I've updated the documentation on Techbase for the Plasma Shell Scripting and review is welcome as are fixes made directly to the page, it is a wiki after all!Back to the topic at hand, however: GSoC and Plasma! It's a bit of a different kind of year for us with GSoC, to be honest. In past years we've had a number of "brand new ideas being implemented from scratch" ...
29.02.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): i am posting this from inside a wallabee
since ades inside of lions. once i had, though, i just had to get into the $PERSON in $ANIMAL bandwagon. i'm a hopeless follower. no animals were harmed in the making of this blog entry, though the wallabee continues to be unimpressed.)my sleep schedule has been completely messed up this week. more so than usual. maybe it was the appearance of Zack. he has that kind of effect on people.i took him to the airport this afternoon as he has a company meeting to be at in Spain. i'm hoping he'll come back to Calgary when he's done there, but that's all still up in the air.the good news is that we mad...
21.04.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Recovery procedures
A hacking sprint like we had in Berlin takes some recovery -- this is common to sprints, as you might see by reading either Chani's or Aaron's "I'm tired" posts after the Plasma sprint in Milan last week. I think it was a good week for sprinting. Maybe Paul will put up some charts showing the kind of productivity effects the different sprints had on their respective projects. I know it felt good to be together in a small group hacking towards a shared goal that, we could articulate over beer and food. Recovery after such an event takes a few days. I didn't even have to change timezones but I'...

12.04.2008 Franz Keferboeck: Of Monsters and (P.) Men
or: How to not instruct a delegate Plasma Sprint, Milano, Italy; it’s Saturday now, the main plasma crowd has already been working for a day, i just arrived yesterday in the late evening after having had a nice day in Bologna. First thing for me to do in the morning was to drop a box of beers at our hackplace (remember, that ain’t bad: put beer and KDE work in front of KDE people, and they’ll first do the coding, then enjoy the beer - not a bottle is missing yet!), so i pulled up in front of Ruphy’s house with my VW Kolf, where Aaron and Kevin were already eagerly expec...
16.04.2008 Kevin Ottens (ervin): Survived to a Tokamak Mark I
I’m back from Milano. The first Plasma sprint has been a pretty good event. My only regret is the low productivity on the first day since we spent quite some time hunting for food. But once we found the right balance, the productivity just got through the roof and we got an humongous amount of things done (as the current activity in the repository proves). I’d like to thank everyone involved in this sprint, we really formed a great bunch, that’s nice to be able to get things done and make new friends at the same time. A special thanks for Richard Moore, without him I’m ...
