24.05.2016 Interview with Neotheta
Could you tell us something about yourself? I’m Neotheta, 23-year-old from Finland and draw colourful pictures with animals, furries and alike. Drawing has been my passion since I was little, I was also interested in digital art early on but had a love&hate relationship with that because computers were not for kids, unstable and tools were pretty awkward back in those days. So I learned drawing mostly with traditional tools first. Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both? Both, I work full-time as an artist right now and hope to continue so! What genre(s) do you work ...
24.03.2008 John Layt: Easter progress on printng
Well it's Easter, and rather than being somewhere warm or interesting (or both), I'm stuck here in cold and wet London. This is partly due to my own lack of organisation, but also due to some dodgy fraudster types who managed to clone my debit card and withdraw large sums of my cash from an ATM in Tunisia (I haven't even been there!). Ironic really, given the number of banking security projects I've worked on :-) Well the cash has been refunded, I've been waiting two weeks for the replacement card to arrive, and without easy access to cash I'm reluctant to board a plane or train to anywhere, ...
11.04.2008 Niels van Mourik (nielsvm): Re: History meme
So, To keep up with the history meme hype that started last week on planet.gnome.org: :~$ history|awk '{a[$2]++ } END{for(i in a){print a[i] " " i}}'|sort -rn|head -n 12 83 ls 73 cd 56 svn 35 sudo 19 screen 18 rm 18 cat 14 make 12 exit 9 kcmshell4 8 wget 8 dd I’m affraid i’m using subversion more for deleting/moving than rm and mv…
12.04.2008 Fred Emmott (fred87): More History Hype
Following on from the posts on planet gnome and KDE, I got curious: $ history|awk '{a[$2]++ } END{for(i in a){print a[i] " " i}}'|sort -rn|head -n 10 165 vim 113 make 104 ./yanihp 96 git 9 ls 4 grep 3 gdb 2 cd 1 sudo 1 history|awk Seems a little unbalanced :|
22.04.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Gaming the system
Or, as a good subtitle: "the assertion that metrics-based software development is stupid." I've got a nice article somewhere in a Communications of the ACM about software metrics. And how using those metrics to drive development or evaluate performance is generally a bad idea. Generally. Not always. Much of it comes down to "gaming the system", which I suppose I had best define as: In "gaming the system" the "system" refers to a system of a process and some measurement on that process and a rewards scheme based on the measurements; "gaming" is the practice of performing actions that result in...
12.05.2008 Alex Merry: randomguy3
I’m still learning the power of gdb. It’s an immensely useful tool for debugging programs (funny, that…). Today I wanted to find out the contents of a QString. “print s”, where “s” is a QString, doesn’t do much for you, though. The data is stored as an array of ushorts inside a shared data member. But all I want is to print out the string as it would appear if I did “qDebug() << s”, for example. Solution: head over to the kdesdk module, and into the kde-devel-gdb. Now copy this to your home directory and put the line “sour...

05.06.2009 KDE 4.2.4 Improves Okular and KMail
"Among the major features brought by KDE 4.2.4 we can notice that the default document viewer, Okular, receives improved support for page selection in the print dialog, when the PostScript backend is used.
10.01.2013 More is worse: About Detail in Icons
A statistical analysis shows that icons with less detail score better in terms of usability. It seems to be an easy truth: Too much detail in icons confuses the users. So we wondered whether we could find any evidence for this truth in the data of our large scale test of the LibreOffice Icons. First we did an expert rating and sorted the icons in two groups, depending on the level of detail in the icon. Group 1 – Low Detail Icons Group 2 – High Detail Icons Some Statistics Next we did a plot of the ratings the icons in the different groups achie...
